welcome to the forum. I guess it is a matter of what you are used to. I'm putting more of a load on the the 650 but it seems fine to me. What type of sortster did you have. I've found that just sitting in the shop was uncomfortable until you got up to the $11000 range models.
So did you get any grief from the dealer when you were looking at the good ol' Savage backing up the explainations about why dealers don't like the Savage?
